It is said that Greeks cultivated the fruit first. The fruit then became essential to the Romans. Prior to 1630, English Colonists introduced the fruit to the New World.<\/p>\n<p>In this current day, the largest producers of cherries today are Turkey and the United States, however, Eastern and Southern Europe produce some of the largest outputs of sour cherries.<\/p>\n<p>Ranked as one of the most health-protective foods overall, cherries are enjoyed all over the world, offering many benefits as:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Promotes Sleep<\/strong><br \/>\nCherries, in particular, tart cherries contain melatonin, a hormone that helps control your sleep-wake cycles. Studies have revealed that eight ounces of tart cherry juice in the morning and again one to two hours before bed increases sleep time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Regulate blood sugar levels<\/strong><br \/>\nCherries have a low glycemic index which means they don\u2019t trigger spikes and crashes in your blood sugar and insulin levels and help regulate blood sugar levels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Fights free radicals<\/strong><br \/>\nCherries are full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, which are required to fight cell-damaging free radicals. Free radicals can lead to cancers and chronic illnesses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Supports the management of osteoarthritis<\/strong><br \/>\nDue to the sufficient supply of antioxidants, cherries can reduce the levels of nitric oxide, which is a compound associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. In turn, this can reduce the joint pain many patients with this condition suffer from.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Reduces muscle soreness after exercise<\/strong><br \/>\nCherries, in particular, tart cherries, reduces soreness that occurs after exercise and therefore promotes recovery. They also protect against the cellular wear and tear from exercise, which also supports muscle recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Cherries can be enjoyed as a snack, added to desserts, puddings, cereals or even savoury dishes. They can be juiced, pureed or used to make jams. Highly concentrated cherry juices are largely available nowadays.<br \/>\nIf you decide to buy the juice, always choose 100% cherry juice to avoid added sugar and additives. Also, of the two types available, tart cherry juice contains more vitamin A and C than sweet cherry juice.<\/p>\n<p>When selecting cherries, the depth of the color is more important than the particular shade of red for sweetness and freshness. A bright green stem also indicates freshness. Red cherries should also be firm, without signs of wrinkles, bruising or decay.<\/p>\n<p>Keep cherries in a cold storage to keep them fresh. It is said that cherries can lose more quality in one hour at room temperature than a day in the refrigerator. Therefore, once bought, store the cherries in the fridge as soon as possible. Wrapping them in a plastic bag prolongs the freshness.<\/p>\n<p>Only wash them with cold water just before eating as washing prior to storage can lead to spoilage.<\/p>\n<p>If you wish to freeze cherries, pit them (or keep them whole), spread them on a tray and freeze.
